Bhagavad Gita BG 9.7

Chapter 9, Verse 7 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम् । कल्पक्षये पुनस्तानि कल्पादौ विसृजाम्यहम् ॥

sarva-bhutani kaunteya prakrtim yanti mamikam kalpa-kshaye punas tani kalpadau visrjamy aham

Meaning

All beings, O Kaunteya, go into My Prakriti at the end of the kalpa. At the beginning of the next kalpa, I project them forth again.

Understanding

The cosmic cycle of creation and dissolution as Krishna's own activity. Sarva-bhutani (all beings — without exception) — kalpa-kshaye (at the end of the kalpa, the dissolution) — yanti mamikam prakrtim (go into My own Prakriti — the primordial nature, the cosmic ground which is Krishna's own). Punas tani kalpadau (again, those same beings, at the beginning of the next kalpa) — visrjamy aham (I project them forth). The Creator (aham — I) is not a separate deity but Krishna himself. The cycle of cosmic dissolution and projection is his own activity through Prakriti. The 'same beings' return (tani — those) because unresolved karma persists through the dissolution.
