Chapter 9, Verse 28 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

शुभाशुभफलैरेवं मोक्ष्यसे कर्मबन्धनैः । सन्न्यासयोगयुक्तात्मा विमुक्तो मामुपैष्यसि ॥

shubhashubha-phalair evam mokshyase karma-bandhanhaih sannyasa-yoga-yuktAtma vimukto mam upaishyasi

Meaning

Thus you shall be freed from the bonds of karma with its auspicious and inauspicious fruits. With the self united in renunciation-yoga, liberated, you shall come to Me.

Understanding

The result of the mad-arpanam practice of verse 27: shubhashubha-phalaih mokshyase karma-bandhanai — you shall be freed from karma-bonds with their auspicious AND inauspicious fruits. Both good and bad fruits (karma's two-directional bondage) are dissolved. How? Sannyasa-yoga-yuktatma (the self united in sannyasa-yoga — the yoga of renunciation). The combination: not renunciation OR yoga but sannyasa-yoga — action done as offering IS renunciation of the fruit. Result: vimukta mam upaishyasi — liberated, you come to Me.
