Bhagavad Gita BG 8.8

Chapter 8, Verse 8 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना । परमं पुरुषं दिव्यं याति पार्थानुचिन्तयन् ॥

abhyasa-yoga-yuktena cetasa nanya-gamina paramam purusham divyam yati parthAnucintayan

Meaning

With the mind made steady by the yoga of practice, not going elsewhere — meditating continuously on the Supreme Divine Person — one reaches Him, O Partha.

Understanding

The practical method following the instruction in v7 (remember Me at all times). Abhyasa-yoga-yuktena cetasa (with a mind united by the yoga of practice — abhyasa is repeated, sustained practice). Na anya-gamina (not going elsewhere — the mind that does not wander, that stays in one place). Paramam purusham divyam anu-cintayan (meditating continuously on the Supreme Divine Person — anu- indicates sustained, ongoing, following meditation). The formula: practice (abhyasa) creates a mind that stays (na anya-gamin), and that staying mind reaches the Supreme through continuous meditation.
