Bhagavad Gita BG 6.8

Chapter 6, Verse 8 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

ज्ञानविज्ञानतृप्तात्मा कूटस्थो विजितेन्द्रियः । युक्त इत्युच्यते योगी समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः ॥

jnana-vijnana-trptatma kutastha vijitendriyas yukta ity ucyate yogi sama-loshta-ashma-kancanah

Meaning

Satisfied in the Self by jnana and vijnana, immovable (kutastha), with conquered senses — such a yogi is called yukta (united). Clod of earth, stone, and gold are the same to that one.

Understanding

Portrait of the yukta yogi: (1) jnana-vijnana-trtptatma — satisfied by jnana (theoretical/scriptural knowledge) and vijnana (direct experiential knowledge). Not just intellectually informed but fulfilled by realized knowledge. (2) Kutastha — immovable like an anvil (kuta), unshaken. (3) Vijitendriyas — senses completely mastered. Result: sama-loshta-ashma-kancana — equally regards a clod of earth, a stone, and gold. The equal-seeing that goes beyond economic value to the same Self in all material.
