Bhagavad Gita BG 6.7
Chapter 6, Verse 7 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
जितात्मनः प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहितः । शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु तथा मानापमानयोः ॥
jitatmanah prashantasya paramatma samahitah shitoshna-sukha-duhkheshu tatha manapamAnayoh
Meaning
For the self-conquered, supremely peaceful one — the Paramatman (supreme Self) is steadily present, equally in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, honor and dishonor.
Understanding
Jitatman (self-conquered) + prashanta (supremely peaceful) = samahita Paramatma — the Supreme Self is present, steadied, realized. The sign of this: equal in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, and crucially — mana and apamanam (honor and dishonor). These last two are the most challenging for the human ego. The person who remains inwardly the same when honored and when dishonored has truly conquered the self.
