Bhagavad Gita BG 6.4

Chapter 6, Verse 4 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

यदा हि नेन्द्रियार्थेषु न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते । सर्वसङ्कल्पसन्न्यासी योगारूढस्तदोच्यते ॥

yada hi nendriyarthesu na karmasv anushajjate sarva-sankalpa-sannyasi yogarudhas tadocyate

Meaning

When one is attached neither to sense-objects nor to actions — having renounced all sankalpas — that one is then said to have ascended to yoga.

Understanding

The definition of yogarudha (one established in yoga): two marks of non-attachment. First: na indriyarthesu anushajjate — not clinging to sense-objects. Second: na karmasu anushajjate — not clinging to the action itself. And underlying both: sarva-sankalpa-sannyasi — one who has renounced ALL sankalpas (all result-projecting, desire-charged mental intentions). This is not inaction or insensitivity but the absence of the ego's compulsive grasping.
