Bhagavad Gita BG 6.32

Chapter 6, Verse 32 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन । सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं स योगी परमो मतः ॥

atmaupamyena sarvatra samam pashyati yo 'rjuna sukham va yadi va duhkham sa yogi paramo matah

Meaning

One who sees equality everywhere by analogy with the self — whether in pleasure or in pain, O Arjuna — that yogi is considered the supreme yogi.

Understanding

Atmaupamyena — by analogy with the self. The method for the supreme sama-darshana: use your own experience of sukha (pleasure) and duhkha (suffering) as the template. You know how much you want pleasure and want to avoid pain. Seeing by this analogy that ALL beings have exactly the same — you see samam (equality) in all. The one who extends this self-awareness into a universal empathy, seeing all pleasure-seeking and pain-avoiding beings as oneself — sa yogi paramo matah — is considered the supreme yogi.
