Chapter 6, Verse 20 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

यत्रोपरमते चित्तं निरुद्धं योगसेवया । यत्र चैवात्मनात्मानं पश्यन्नात्मनि तुष्यति ॥

yatroparamate cittam niruddham yoga-sevaya yatra caivAtmana atmanam pashyan n'atmani tushyati

Meaning

Where the mind, restrained by the practice of yoga, rests in cessation — and where, seeing the Self by the Self, one is content in the Self alone...

Understanding

The beginning of a three-verse description of samadhi (verses 20-22). Yatra (where) — uparamate cittam — the mind rests in cessation (uparamate — upwards-rest, coming to a stop). Niruddham yoga-sevaya — restrained, gathered, by the sevana (service, practice) of yoga. And: atmanatmanam pashyan — seeing the Self by the Self (the subject-object collapse — the seer and seen are the same). Atmani tushyati — content, satisfied, in the Self alone. This triple satisfaction is the beginning of samadhi.
