Bhagavad Gita BG 6.18

Chapter 6, Verse 18 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

यदा विनियतं चित्तं आत्मन्येवावतिष्ठते । निःस्पृहः सर्वकामेभ्यो युक्त इत्युच्यते तदा ॥

yada viniyatam cittam atmany evAvatiShThate nihsprhah sarva-kamebhyo yukta ity ucyate tada

Meaning

When the thoroughly disciplined mind rests in the Self alone — free from longing for all desires — then that one is called yukta (united).

Understanding

The definition of yukta via the state of the mind: viniyatam cittam (the thoroughly disciplined, completely controlled mind) avatiShThate (rests, abides) atmani eva (in the Self alone). Combined with nishsprhah sarva-kamebhyah (free from longing for ALL desires — not just some). Then — tada (at that moment) — that person is called yukta. Not by name or ritual or status but by this inner state: the mind resting in the Self, free from desire's pull.
