Bhagavad Gita BG 5.7

Chapter 5, Verse 7 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

योगयुक्तो विशुद्धात्मा विजितात्मा जितेन्द्रियः । सर्वभूतात्मभूतात्मा कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते ॥

yoga-yukto vishuddhaTma vijitaTma jitendriyah sarva-bhutATma-bhutaTma kurvann api na lipyate

Meaning

One united in yoga, with purified self, with conquered self, with senses mastered, whose self has become the Self of all beings — though acting, such a one is not tainted.

Understanding

Four marks of the karma yogi who acts without bondage: vishuddhAtma (pure self — mind purified of selfish desires), vijitAtma (conquered self — ego not running the show), jitendriyah (senses mastered), and the culminating description: sarva-bhutAtma-bhutAtma — whose Atman HAS BECOME the Atman of all beings. This is advaitic realization: seeing the same Self in all. Such a person, even while acting (kurvann api), na lipyate — is not tainted, not bound by karma.
