Bhagavad Gita BG 5.3

Chapter 5, Verse 3 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

Meaning

Know that one who neither hates nor desires is always a renunciant. Free from all dualities, O mighty-armed, such a person is easily liberated from bondage.

Understanding

True renunciation defined: the nitya-sannyasi (eternal renunciant) is not one who wears saffron or lives in a forest, but one who na dveshti (does not hate, does not push away) and na kankhshati (does not crave, does not pull toward). This is nirdvandva — free from the dvandvas (pairs of opposites). Such a person is liberated sukham (easily, joyfully) from bandha (bondage).
