Meaning

Knowing Me as the ultimate enjoyer of all sacrifices and austerities, the great lord of all worlds, the friend of all beings — one attains peace.

Understanding

The magnificent closing verse of Chapter 5: a three-fold knowledge of Krishna that brings peace. (1) Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam — the ultimate enjoyer (bhokta) of all yajna and tapas. All spiritual practice flows to and is enjoyed by the Divine. (2) Sarva-loka-maheshvara — the great Lord (maheshvara) of all worlds — the Sovereign of all existence. (3) Suhridam sarva-bhutanam — the unconditional friend (suhrd — good-heart) of ALL beings. The universe is not indifferent — it is undergirded by a well-wishing intelligence. Knowing these three, one rcchati shantim — attains peace.
