Bhagavad Gita BG 4.37
Chapter 4, Verse 37 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
यथैधांसि समिद्धोऽग्निः भस्मसात्कुरुतेऽर्जुन । ज्ञानाग्निः सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात्कुरुते तथा ॥
yathaidhami samiddho 'gnih bhasmasat kurute 'rjuna jnanagnih sarva-karmani bhasmasat kurute tatha
Meaning
Just as a blazing fire reduces firewood to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all karma to ashes.
Understanding
The most powerful image in the chapter: samiddha agni (blazing fire) reduces edhami (firewood) to bhasma (ash). Not diminished, not partially burned — completely reduced. Jnanagni does the same to sarva-karmani (all karma, accumulated across lifetimes). What remains? Only ash — which cannot become firewood again, cannot create new bondage. This is the radical promise of knowledge: not gradual improvement but complete, instant liberation from the binding power of karma.
