Bhagavad Gita BG 2.62
Chapter 2, Verse 62 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंसः सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते । सङ्गात्सञ्जायते कामः कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते ॥ ६२ ॥
dhyāyato viṣayān puṃsaḥ saṅgas teṣūpajāyate saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho 'bhijāyate
Meaning
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.
Understanding
The famous 'chain of ruin' begins here. The sequence: Contemplation of sense objects (dhyāyataḥ viṣayān) → Attachment (saṅga) → Desire/Lust (kāma) → Anger (krodha). The starting point is mental dwelling on sense objects — not even physical contact, just mental attention. From attention comes attachment; from attachment, desire; when desire is obstructed, anger arises. This chain can begin anywhere, at any moment, with just a sustained thought.
