Bhagavad Gita BG 2.57
Chapter 2, Verse 57 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
यः सर्वत्रानभिस्नेहस्तत्तत्प्राप्य शुभाशुभम् । नाभिनन्दति न द्वेष्टि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ॥ ५७ ॥
yaḥ sarvatrānabhisnehas tat tat prāpya śubhāśubham nābhinandati na dveṣṭi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā
Meaning
He who is unattached everywhere, and who neither rejoices nor hates on meeting good or evil — his wisdom is firmly established.
Understanding
The quality of non-attachment (anabhisneha — without sticky clinging) in all situations. When good (śubha) arrives — 'nābhinandati' — he does not excessively rejoice; when evil (aśubha) arrives — 'na dveṣṭi' — he does not hate or reject. This is not indifference or numbness — it is the freedom that comes from knowing that all conditions are temporary and the self remains unaffected. 'Tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā' — his wisdom is firmly established.
