Bhagavad Gita BG 2.44
Chapter 2, Verse 44 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
भोगैश्वर्यप्रसक्तानां तयापहृतचेतसाम् । व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिः समाधौ न विधीयते ॥ ४४ ॥
bhogaiśvarya-prasaktānāṃ tayāpahṛta-cetasām vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate
Meaning
For those who are attached to enjoyment and power, and whose minds are carried away by such words, the resolute intellect fixed on samadhi is not formed.
Understanding
The resolute, focused intelligence ('vyavasāyātmikā buddhi' from v.41) cannot arise in those whose minds are stolen ('apahṛta-cetasām') by attachment to enjoyment and opulence. 'Samādhi' here means the steady focus of the mind on the highest goal. When the mind chases pleasures, it cannot also maintain this steady focus. The scattered mind and the resolute mind cannot coexist. One must choose the direction of one's intelligence.
