Bhagavad Gita BG 18.53

Chapter 18, Verse 53 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं परिग्रहम् । विमुच्य निर्ममः शान्तो ब्रह्मभूयाय कल्पते ॥

ahankAram balam darpam kAmam krodhAm parigraham vimucya nirmmamah shAnto brahma-bhuyAya kalpate

Meaning

Releasing ego, force, arrogance, desire, anger, and possessiveness — free from 'mine,' peaceful — one becomes fit to attain Brahman.

Understanding

The completion of the inner preparation: vimucya (having released) ahankAra (ego, the I-sense), bala (force/assertion), darpa (arrogance), kAma (desire), krodha (anger), parigraha (possessiveness/accumulation). Nirmmamah (free from 'mine' — without the sense of 'my' possessions, 'my' people, 'my' status). Shanto (peaceful). Brahma-bhuyaya kalpate (becomes fit/capable of Brahman-attainment). The six to release + two positive qualities (nirmama + shanta) describe the state of readiness for Brahman. This is the culmination of the inner purification sequence begun at v51.
