Bhagavad Gita BG 16.14
Chapter 16, Verse 14 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि । ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी ॥
asau maya hatah shatrur hanishye caparanapi ishvaro 'ham aham bhogi siddho 'ham balavan sukhi
Meaning
That enemy has been slain by me; and I shall slay others also. I am the lord; I am the enjoyer; I am successful, powerful, and happy.
Understanding
The demonic monologue continues — now revealing its power-dimension: Asau maya hatah shatruh (that enemy has been slain by me — asau = that one, maya = by me). Hanishye ca aparan api (and I shall slay others too — the violence extends into future). Then the grand self-declaration: Ishvaro 'ham (I am the lord — claiming divine lordship), aham bhogi (I am the enjoyer — claiming sovereignty over pleasure), siddho 'ham (I am accomplished/successful), balavan (I am powerful), sukhi (I am happy). Five ego-claims in rapid sequence, all centered on 'aham' (I). This is the demonic parody of the divine: while the Divine is the true Ishvara (Ch15.17), the demonic claim 'ishvaro 'ham' — I AM the lord. While the jiva is a fragment of the Divine (Ch15.7), the demonic asserts the ego's total sovereignty. The language mirrors the Upanishadic 'aham Brahmasmi' but with ego instead of Atman.
