Bhagavad Gita BG 16.13

Chapter 16, Verse 13 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

इदमद्य मया लब्धं इमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम् । इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम् ॥

idam adya maya labdham imam prapsye manoratham idam astidad api me bhavisyati punar dhanam

Meaning

This was gained by me today; this desire I shall obtain; this is mine and this wealth shall also be mine in the future.

Understanding

Krishna presents the inner voice of the demonic ego — a stream of acquisitive self-talk: Idam adya maya labdham (this was gained by me today — idam = this, adya = today, maya = by me, labdham = gained). Imam prapsye manoratham (this desire/wish I shall obtain — prapsye = I will achieve, manoratham = heart's wish, chariot of the mind). Idam asti idam api me bhavisyati punar dhanam (this is mine, and this wealth shall also be mine in the future). The internal monologue is entirely organized around 'maya' (by me), 'me' (mine), and future acquisition. There is no awareness of the Divine, of others, of duty — only the accumulation-loop. The present is 'gained,' the future is 'will gain,' and everything is 'mine.' This is pure ego operating as the organizing principle of a life.
