Bhagavad Gita BG 14.3

Chapter 14, Verse 3 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

मम योनिर्महद्ब्रह्म तस्मिन्गर्भं दधाम्यहम् । सम्भवः सर्वभूतानां ततो भवति भारत ॥

mama yonir mahad brahma tasmin garbham dadhamy aham sambhavah sarva-bhutanam tato bhavati bharata

Meaning

My womb is the great Brahman; in that I place the seed; from that arises the origin of all beings, O Bharata.

Understanding

A startling revelation about the cosmological ground of birth: mama yonir mahad brahma (My womb/matrix is the great Brahman — mahat brahma = the cosmic Prakriti, the primordial matter-principle). Tasmin garbham dadhamy aham (in that I place the seed/embryo — garbham dadhami = I impregnate). Sambhavah sarva-bhutanam tato bhavati (from that arises the origin of all beings). The universal Mother is Prakriti (mahat brahma); the universal Father is the Supreme Purusha (Krishna). Every birth in the universe — every body, every insect, every god — arises from this primordial union of Purusha-Prakriti. This is the teaching of the entire creation as a single cosmic birth.
