Bhagavad Gita BG 13.24

Chapter 13, Verse 24 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

य एवं वेत्ति पुरुषं प्रकृतिं च गुणैः सह । सर्वथा वर्तमानोऽपि न स भूयोऽभिजायते ॥

ya evam vetti purusham prakrtim ca gunaih saha sarvatha vartamano 'pi na sa bhuyo 'bhijayate

Meaning

One who knows Purusha and Prakriti together with the gunas in this way — in whatever condition one exists — is not born again.

Understanding

The liberation-declaration: ya evam vetti purusham prakrtim ca gunaih saha (one who knows Purusha AND Prakriti along with the gunas in this way — evam means as just described). Sarvatha vartamano 'pi (in whatever condition one may be — whether householder or renunciant, in success or struggle). Na sa bhuyo 'bhijayate (that one is not born again). The 'sarvatha' (in whatever condition) is remarkably inclusive: liberation through this knowledge is not dependent on external circumstances. A householder engaged in family life, one who truly knows Purusha-Prakriti distinction, is freed just as surely as a forest renunciant.
