Chapter 13, Verse 10 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
असक्तिरनभिष्वङ्गः पुत्रदारगृहादिषु । नित्यं च समचित्तत्वं इष्टानिष्टोपपत्तिषु ॥
asaktir anabhishvangah putra-dara-grhadishu nityam ca sama-cittatvam ishta-anishta-upapattishu
Meaning
Non-attachment, non-clinging to son, wife, home, and the rest; and constant even-mindedness toward desirable and undesirable events —
Understanding
Two more qualities of jnana: asaktih (non-attachment — asanga, not holding, not binding oneself to outcomes). Anabhishvangah (non-clinging — abhishvanga is deep emotional entanglement; an-abhishvangah is freedom from being caught). The objects: putra-dara-grha (son, wife, home) — the inner circle of life's most powerful attachments. Nityam ca sama-cittatvam (CONSTANT even-mindedness). Ishtanishta-upapattishu (toward desirable and undesirable occurrences alike). This is not coldness or lack of love — it is freedom from the anxious clinging that makes loved ones into sources of bondage rather than sources of joy.
