Bhagavad Gita BG 12.17

Chapter 12, Verse 17 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

Meaning

One who neither rejoices nor hates, neither grieves nor desires, who has relinquished both auspicious and inauspicious — such a devoted one is dear to Me.

Understanding

A key verse in the portrait. Na hrsyati (does not exult/rejoice excessively). Na dveshti (does not hate). Na shocati (does not grieve). Na kankshati (does not desire/crave). Shubhashubha-parityagi (one who has let go of both auspicious AND inauspicious — beyond the good-bad polarity). Bhaktiman yah sa me priyah (such a devoted one is dear to Me). The release of both shubha and ashubha — not just clinging to the good or rejecting the bad but transcending the polarity itself. This is equanimity at its deepest level.
