Bhagavad Gita BG 12.15
Chapter 12, Verse 15 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः । हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैः मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥
yasman nodvijate loko lokan nodvijate ca yah harsha-amarsha-bhaya-udvegaih mukto yah sa ca me priyah
Meaning
One by whom the world is not agitated, and who is not agitated by the world, and who is free from elation, resentment, fear and anxiety — that person is dear to Me.
Understanding
The verse measures the devotee in both directions: the world is not disturbed by this person, and this person is not disturbed by the world. The inner freedom is spelled out as freedom from four reactions: harsha (elation), amarsha (resentment or intolerance), bhaya (fear) and udvega (anxiety). The next verse continues the portrait with qualities that show in action.
