Bhagavad Gita BG 12.14

Chapter 12, Verse 14 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

सन्तुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः । मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिः यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥

santushta satatam yogi yatatma drdha-nishcayah mayy arpita-mano-buddhih yo mad-bhaktah sa me priyah

Meaning

Always content, a meditator (yogi), self-controlled, of firm conviction, with mind and intellect offered to Me — such a devoted one is dear to Me.

Understanding

Santushta satatam (always content — not contingent on circumstances; contentment as a fundamental orientation, not a mood). Yogi (a meditator, one who is in yoga — one who is connected). Yatatma (self-controlled — yata: restrained, atma: self; the one who has the self under discipline). Drdha-nishcayah (of firm conviction — drdha: firm, unshakeable; nishcaya: conviction, certainty; not swayed by doubt or external argument). Mayi arpita-mano-buddhih (with mind and intellect offered/placed in Me — arpita: offered, dedicated; both the emotional center/manas AND the intellectual faculty/buddhi are given). Yo mad-bhaktah sa me priyah (such a devoted one is dear to Me — priya: dear, beloved). The verse describes the inward qualities of the one who is dear: contentment, meditative connection, self-discipline, firm clarity, and the giving over of both heart and mind.
