Meaning
Sanjaya said: Having thus spoken to Arjuna, Vasudeva (Krishna) showed his own form again. The Mahatman, having assumed again the gentle/beautiful form (saumya-vapuh), consoled the frightened Arjuna.
Understanding
Sanjaya narrates the return. Svakam rupam darshayamasa bhuyah (showed his own form again). And: bhutva punah saumya-vapuh (having become again the gentle/beautiful form). Saumya-vapuh — saumya means gentle, pleasing, moon-like, auspicious. The return to the two-armed human-like form is described as saumya — as the MORE accessible, the gentle, the beloved form. Ashvasayamas ca bhitam enam (consoled the frightened Arjuna). The Mahatman returns to the form of the friend.
