Bhagavad Gita BG 11.49

Chapter 11, Verse 49 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावः दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम् । व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य ॥

mA te vyathA mA ca vimudha-bhavah drshtvA rupam ghoram idrNG mamEdam vyapeta-bhih prita-manAh punas tvam tad eva me rupam idam prapashya

Meaning

Do not be frightened, do not be confused, having seen this terrible form of Mine. With fear dispelled and glad-hearted, see again this form of Mine.

Understanding

Krishna's words of reassurance. Ma te vyatha (let there not be distress for you — ma: negative imperative, vyatha: pain, distress). Ma ca vimudha-bhavah (let there not be a bewildered/confused state — vimudha: thoroughly confused, lost). Drshtvam rupam ghoram idrnG mamedam (having seen this terrible form of Mine — ghoram: terrible, fierce; idrng: such a kind). Then the instruction: vyapeta-bhih (with fear departed — vyapeta: gone away, removed). Prita-manAh (with a glad/pleased mind — prita: loved, pleased). Punas tvam tad eva me rupam idam prapashya (again see this form of Mine — prapashya: look at, behold well). The transition: from the terrifying to the gentle, from vyatha (distress) to prita (gladness), from fear (bhih) to the beloved form.
