Chapter 11, Verse 42 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

यच्चावहासार्थमसत्कृतोऽसि विहारशय्यासनभोजनेषु । एकोऽथवाप्यच्युत तत्समक्षं तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम् ॥

yac cAvahAsArtham asatkrto 'si vihAra-shayyAsana-bhojaNeshu eko 'tha vApy acyuta tat-samaksham tat kshAmaye tvAm aham aprameyam

Meaning

And whatever insult has been shown to You in jest — while playing, resting, sitting, or eating — alone or in the presence of others, O Achyuta — I ask Your forgiveness for all that, O Immeasurable One.

Understanding

The verse continues from v41's confession of calling Krishna 'Hey friend!' Yac ca avahasa-artham asatkrto 'si (whatever insult/disrespect was shown to you in jest). Vihara-shayya-asana-bhojaneshu (while playing/traveling, while resting/lying down, while sitting, while eating — all the casual moments of companionship). Ekah (alone — just the two of them) atha vapi (or even) tat-samaksham (in front of others, in company). Acyuta — O Immovable One, the Unslipped (a name of Krishna: he who never falls from dharma). Tat kshamaye tvam (I ask forgiveness from you for all that). Aprameyam (O Immeasurable One). The confession is specific: those moments of casual dinner-table familiarity, of joking while reclining, of casual address in company — all these now seen as presumption before the Immeasurable.
