Bhagavad Gita BG 10.37

Chapter 10, Verse 37 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनञ्जयः । मुनीनामप्यहं व्यासः कवीनामुशना कविः ॥

vrsninam vasudevo 'smi pandavanAm dhananjayah muninam apy aham vyasah kavinam ushana kavih

Meaning

Among the Vrishnis I am Vasudeva; among the Pandavas I am Dhananjaya (Arjuna); among the sages I am Vyasa; among the seers (kavi) I am Ushana.

Understanding

Intimate personal vibhutis: (1) Vasudeva among the Vrishnis (Krishna's own clan). (2) Dhananjaya (Arjuna — 'winner of wealth') among the Pandavas. Krishna identifies himself as Arjuna — and Arjuna is speaking with Krishna! The non-dual recognition: the student IS the teacher. (3) Vyasa among the munis — the great sage who compiled the Vedas and composed the Mahabharata (and the Gita is within the Mahabharata, and Vyasa is said to have composed it). (4) Ushana (Shukracharya, the teacher of the asuras) among the kavi-seers — wisdom even among the enemy's teachers.
