Bhagavad Gita BG 10.35

Chapter 10, Verse 35 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् । मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहम् ऋतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥

brhat-sama tatha samnam gayatri chandasam aham masanam margashirsho 'ham rtunam kusuma-karah

Meaning

Among the Sama hymns I am the Brihatsama; among meters (chandas) I am the Gayatri; among months I am Margashirsha; among seasons I am the flower-bearing (kusuma-kara) spring.

Understanding

Four vibhutis spanning sacred sound, time, and season: (1) Samnam Brhat-sama — among the Sama Veda hymns, I am the Brihatsama, the great (brhat) Sama. The Sama Veda is the musical/chanted Veda; the Brihatsama is its most exalted, most expansive hymn. (2) Chandasam Gayatri — among all metrical forms (chandas), I am the Gayatri, the sacred 24-syllable meter of the Gayatri Mantra (Rigveda 3.62.10), considered the mother of all Vedas, the meter of liberation. (3) Masanam Margashirsha — among months I am Margashirsha (November-December), considered in the tradition the most auspicious month, the beginning of the ideal portion of the year when crops are harvested and the air is clear. (4) Rtunam Kusumakara — among seasons, the flower-bearing spring (Vasanta, the season of blossoming). Spring as the vibhuti — the season when life manifests most exuberantly, most beautifully.
