Bhagavad Gita BG 1.27

Chapter 1, Verse 27 — Meaning, Translation & Explanation

श्वशुरान्सुहृदश्चैव सेनयोरुभयोरपि । तान्समीक्ष्य स कौन्तेयः सर्वान्बन्धूनवस्थितान् ॥ २७ ॥

śvaśurān suhṛdaś caiva senayor ubhayor api tān samīkṣya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvān bandhūn avasthitān

Meaning

Fathers-in-law and dear friends too — in both armies — seeing all these kinsmen standing there, Arjuna, son of Kunti, was overcome.

Understanding

Even fathers-in-law (śvaśurān) and close friends (suhṛdaḥ) are present — in both armies. The phrase 'senayor ubhayor api' (in both armies) is crucial: Arjuna has loved ones on his own side too. He faces not just the grief of killing opponents but the knowledge that everyone he loves is at risk. 'Kaunteyaḥ' (son of Kunti) again emphasises his human, family-rooted identity.
